Measles jab warning to all parents

An outbreak of measles in Wilmslow has triggered a mass vaccination programme for all children in the area.

Health officials are warning all teenagers and primary pupils to get the MMR vaccine to ward off an epidemic.

Now a race is on to ensure children are immunised before their return to school – a perfect breeding ground for the virus.

Sixteen victims have already been confirmed in Wilmslow since the beginning of July, with patients ranging from 10 months to fifteen years old.

Two children were admitted to hospital but have since recovered and been allowed home.

The other children are all said to be recovering well.

All cases were in children who had not been vaccinated.

Blood found in park

Police are appealing for witnesses who can help them solve the riddle of a mystery puddle of human blood found in a Wilmslow car park.

Forensic tests on the blood, which was found early on Wednesday (August 18) morning in Twinnies Bridge Car Park, revealed that it was from a human rather than animal.

Experts are now trying to match the DNA profile to identify the blood’s owner.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “Until further information is known, police cannot determine whether the blood found is as a result of an accident or something more sinister.”

A section of the car park, near a footbridge running over the River Bollin, was cordoned off by police until 4pm on Wednesday while crime scene investigators gathered evidence.

A third time of cancer for 18 year old Chelsea

18 year old Chelsea

A teenager who has twice beaten cancer is fighting the disease for a third time.

Chelsea Robb, 18, was first diagnosed with cancer two years ago when she noticed her stomach was swollen.

She thought she was just gaining weight and was stunned when she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

Doctors told Chelsea, from The Grove, Shaw Heath, Stockport, that she had a lump on her right ovary in November 2008.

Further tests at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, showed it was cancerous and Chelsea, who was studying for her AS Levels at Cheadle and Marple Sixth Form College, underwent treatment at The Christie in Withington.

She had the tumour removed followed by a course of chemotherapy, which she completed in March last year.

Six months later a routine check-up revealed she had a second tumour, wrapped around her bowel, and she had more surgery. But she was dealt a third blow when a tumour was found between her liver and diaphragm in December.

She had more surgery and is still undergoing chemotherapy.

Chelsea is now encouraging fundraisers to sign up for Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life in Wilmslow.

The overnight event takes place at Wilmslow High School on September 11-12.

Chelsea will form part of the lap of honour, where cancer survivors will take centre stage to celebrate life and raise cash for Cancer Research UK.

Team members take it in turns to walk round a track while the others enjoy the carnival atmosphere. For details visit cancerresearchuk.org/relay or call Liz Wood on 07823322710 or 08716 412 602.

Fighting Dogs in Local Park

Carrs Recreation Park in Wilmslow

The Carrs Recreation Park in Wilmslow

A recent article in the Wilmslow Express says that patrols are being stepped up at a Wilmslow park amid fears pet owners are using it as a training ground for dangerous dogs.

Members of the public have reported seeing dogs being beaten with chains and goaded into fighting each other at The Carrs recreation ground.  One heartbroken family has even had its pet rabbit savaged by a dog.

The sightings have sparked concerns about dog-fighting rings using breeds such as pitbulls, Staffordshire bull terriers, and bulldogs.
